چکیده

The morphology of antibiotic-associated enterocolitis in the hamster is described and compared with human antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis. It is shown to be a caecal disease with proliferative mucosal changes and in this respect unlike the human counterpart. The bacteriology and toxicology, however, are identical. In addition, mucosal changes are described in animals on antibiotics but without established enterocolitis. As a result we suggest that there may be

Antibiotic-Associated Apoptotic Enterocolitis in the Absence of a Defined Pathogen: The Role of Intestinal Microbiota Depletion*

OBJECTIVE Antibiotic therapy is a major risk factor for the development of diarrhea and colitis with varying severity. Often the origin of antibiotic-associated gastrointestinal deterioration remains elusive and no specific infectious agents could be discerned. PATIENTS We represent three cases of intractable high-volume diarrhea associated with combined antibiotic and steroid therapy in crit...

Bacillus pumilus in the induction of clindamycin-associated enterocolitis in guinea pigs.

Antibiotic-associated enterocolitis was induced in guinea pigs by the intraperitoneal injection of clindamycin. The colonic and cecal mucosa and feces of acutely ill animals were cultured under aerobic and anaerobic conditions on 5% sheep blood agar plates and on a selective and differential medium for Clostridium difficile. All morphologically distinct colony types were isolated in pure cultur...

Neutropenic enterocolitis associated with Clostridium tertium.

A 15 year old boy being treated for relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia developed severe diarrhoea and abdominal pain which worsened despite empirical antibiotic treatment. A right hemicolectomy was performed. The caecum and ascending colon showed changes typical of neutropenic enterocolitis. Clostridium tertium was isolated from faeces, blood cultures, and from the resected gut wall, with n...

Clindamycin-associated enterocolitis in guinea pigs: evidence for a bacterial toxin.

Experimental enterocolitis was induced in guinea pigs by intraperitoneal injection of clindamycin. Specimens of feces were collected daily in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.0) and pooled every second day. The pooled samples were centrifuged to remove solids, and the supernatant was sterilized by membrane filtration. The sterile fecal supernatants were then dialyzed for 48 h against two 15-lite...

Intestinal barrier failure during experimental necrotizing enterocolitis: protective effect of EGF treatment.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common intestinal disease of premature infants. Although increased mucosal permeability and altered epithelial structure have been associated with many intestinal disorders, the role of intestinal barrier function in NEC pathogenesis is currently unknown. We investigated the structural and functional changes of the intestinal barrier in a rat model of...
